Today at Nisqually

After Skye’s morning walk I decided that I needed to take advantage of our beautiful weather, and get some kind of pictures this week, and spend the rest of the day at Nisqually.

The day seemed to being rather propitiously, when I spotted this American Bittern right outside the visitor’s center, the first I’ve managed to get a picture of this year.

Unfortunately, the rest of the day didn’t seem to follow that lead as birds were scarce again. Still, it’s hard not to appreciate a late summer day when the temperature reaches 80º and the sunlight comes streaming down through green leaves.

Still, there were more than a few signs that Fall is near, with many leaves starting to turn brown,

while others are turning brilliant fall-reds.

Finally, on the way back, after covering nearly seven miles I managed to spot several Great Blue Herons that were back feeding at the creeks after the tide finally came in.

Of course, now that breeding season is over Great Blue Herons are nearly as common as crows and Canada Geese so I wasn’t overly excited to be getting yet another picture of them. After three years of shooting them, I’m finding it very difficult to get better shots than I already have filling up my hard drive.

I was surprised, though, to see this male Wood Duck in full breeding colors. I could have sworn that that didn’t take place until Spring.

No Butterflies Today

It’s been tough getting good photos around here lately, even though the weather has been beautiful all week long. I decided that a sure bet was the Butterfly Garden at the Pacific Science Garden, so I asked Lael to go along with me for a day out.

Unfortunately, after we drove all the way to Seattle and paid our $10 parking fee, I discovered that the Butterfly Garden was closed for the week. Needless to say, I wasn’t happy about that, but I wasn’t about to leave, either.

We walked around the Seattle Center Gardens for 30 minutes waiting for the center to open. But I’m finding it harder and harder to get pictures of Lael where she’s not posing, as she obviously was in this shot:

As it turned out, we had a great time playing with the “science” exhibits and watching an iMax movie about beavers, but it’s difficult to get photographs when you actually have to participate or when the lights are out. Most of the time, my camera simply got in the way.

Occasionally I managed to get a shot like this where Lael was so caught up with the display she forgot I was there.

Perhaps my favorite shot of the day was this one of a Martin Luther King quote I’d never heard before.

I must admit, however, that I wondered what it says about our society that officials felt they had to rope off the rock it was written on to protect it.

Consider this a Political Entry

If you visit here regularly you’ve probably noted I’ve been unusually silent on the presidential elections, especially considering that I began this blog as a protest against America’s invasion of Afghanistan and wrote extensively, even on another political blog, during the last Presidential election. I haven’t changed my politics since then, though I was undecided whether I wanted Hilary or Barack to win the Democratic nomination. After Obama won the nomination I donated a hundred dollars to his campaign.

Overall, though, I’ve been less than happy with the Democrats since they gained their congressional majority. So much so, that I’ve not given money to the DNC again, and doubt I will ever do so again. I really consider myself an independent, not a Democrat, and have decided that it only makes sense to give money to particular candidates whose ideas I endorse, not to a party as such.

I know that I’ll vote for Obama and Biden in this election, so I’ve spared myself the agony of listening to all the political news, though I still enjoy listening to The Daily Show. I no longer watch news shows. I do continue to read rather broadly on the web, though NOT political blogs. I belong to a number of organizations like the ACLU or conservation groups that send me email updates when an important bill is coming up, and I try to personalize any messages that I send to my representatiives.

The main reason I’ve not mentioned politics, though, is that I assume that nearly everyone who visits here regularly and is an American citizen is already going to vote for Obama. Certainly my liberal bias is obvious, as is the political views of nearly everyone I link to, though that’s a general impression, not one I’ve tried to verify.

About the only political recommendation I would make is that readers subscribe to both factcheck.org/ and Politifact.com to set straight all the crazy rumors and false statements that both parties seem unable to avoid in their ads, even though it’s a little depressing how both candidates seem to feel it is necessary to lie, or at least distort the truth in order to run a winning campain.

After I read an article sent by a friend that suggested that conservative thinkers have dominated recent political discussion, I have been reading Moyers On Democracy and will comment on politics in general in the next few days.
