More Colorado Birding

I didn’t do any serious birding in Colorado, but I did take my camera with me everywhere I went, knowing that many birds I would see would seldom be seen around home.

I’ve gotten pictures of Western Kingbirds before, but never one quite as good as this one that I got while taking a walk in the open space a short distance from Tyson and Jen’s house:

The rest of these shots were taken in an afternoon outing to an open space just outside of Boulder. My favorite is probably this shot of an Olive-Sided Flycatcher, a bird we do have in Western Washington but I can’t remember ever getting a shot of:

A hiker we met said Blue Jays

Blue Jay

like this one are all too common and are considered pests. I’ve been guilty of calling Stellar Jays and Scrub Jays “Blue Jays,” but I think this might be first time I’ve ever seen one.

I told everyone that I’d seen several of these kinds of butterflies in Colorado, but I’d never seen one land. Jen was sharp-eyed enough to spot this one for me,

Monarch, I think

a Monarch, I think.
