  1. Cormorants are fairly common winter residents here in the Pacific Northwest, but I really hadn’t paid much attention to them until lately.

    The wing pose is a characteristic one, and they use it to dry out their wings because, unlike most water birds, their wings are not waterproof.

    Before learning that tidbit of information, I always thought they were leading the choir or trying to get their followers to protest human misuse of the environment.

    The bottom shot is less typical, because all you usually see in the water is their head and neck sticking up because they swim so low in the water. They look like the Loch Ness monster.
