Nothing Gold Can Stay

Though I’m chomping at the bit to hit the road and explore some new birding areas, I still try to visit Theler Wetlands at least once a week even if birding is slow. This time of year the Greenness is nearly as much of an attraction as the birds. Fall is beautiful, but no match for the brilliant chartreuse/greens that cover the ground, while trying their best to cover the sky.

Hard to believe that a few weeks ago, the only green on this log was the brownish-green moss

that is slowly retreating under the onslaught of vibrant green, but will invariably reemerge next Fall.

My favorite place this time of year, though, is at the far end of the trail, next to the creek where the new leaves of the deciduous trees glow in the sunlight,

reminding me each Spring of Frost’s Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Pretty sure I’ll never capture the beauty I see here,

but that won’t stop me from trying.

  1. Champing, big guy.
    I have a recording of Frost reading that poem. He starts by saying, “I remember when that idea first occurred to me, and now I look every spring to see of I was right.”
