It takes a week
to renew the prescription
for drugs you’re not sure
you need and you know
you can’t afford —
Not to take.
Maybe.

Exactly. *sigh*
Depending on what ails you, writing poetry could be the best medicine. Keep it up and thank you!
Stopped my chronic meds for cholesterol a few months ago, lost 4 kg’s and never felt better. Rather quality of life than length of life left.
I heard poetry barely hiding in there, RudI!

Definitely an appropriate poem for us aging folks.
Thanks for the poem, I agree with gadfly12
and I add already alone reading poems helps, makes you healthy and happy, lets you get up again, works wonders.
I am an aged man, “a paltry thing, a tattered coat upon stick, unless soul clap its hands and sing..”
and reads poems by W.B. Yeats.
And excuse me, English is not my mother tongue.
My dreary, dull, pessimistic-optimistic thoughts to your poem “Old Age”
…prescription
for medications you’re not sure you really need,
you ever really know that, my brother?
And you know or don’t know, maybe you believe it or you think about it,
just like me,
You can’t afford not to take these?
But does that also mean that you and I could afford to take the medication?
Taking the medication, I mean literally swallowing it.
(That would mean that we are healthy enough to tolerate the effects of drugs – the side effects).
At least you know (or don’t you know that too?) that you could afford it
to take the medicaments, to buy them – financially speaking.
But is this a tranquillisation in times of general uncertainty ?
Maybe. I don’t know.
But anyway
“We must laugh and we must sing,
We are blest by everything.
Everything we look upon is blest.” W.B. Yeats
At $300 a month, I can still afford the drugs, but it’s money I can’t spend on a vacation or give to my grandkids to help with college costs. I’m lucky to be able to afford the drugs at all, but that doesn’t mean I want to squander the money if I don’t really need the drugs.
