I’ve finally finished Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge, compiled my notes, and should have something more to say tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

Meanwhile, it was rainy and cloudy today, so I was limited to shooting pictures of avian visitors at the backyard feeder. Luckily, it was one of our better days, as we got visits from both the Stellar Jays

and a personal favorite, the Varied Thrush.

Varied Thrush

Even though it was overcast and the ISO was set to 800, the pictures are considerably better than my previous shots of the thrush when it was even darker.

    How beautiful they are!

    Beautiful birds and nice photos.

  3. I am green with envy Loren. We have jays and we have thrushes – but they are but pale relations of those two.

Beautiful, Loren. They took my breath away. I wasn’t familiar with these birds. They do kind of resemble a blue jay and a robin.

I actually had a picture where there was both a robin and the thrush in the same shot, and the robin is considerably larger and heavier than the Varied Thrush.

I certainly wasn’t familiar with them until I took up bird watching about four years ago. It took me two years of looking for one before I saw it, and that was in California.
