I don't remember the details of Hardy's novels because it's been so long since I read them. As I read your posts, though, I clearly remember the atmosphere and the landscape and that I found the stories compelling. I'm trying to remember if alcoholism is a recurring element in Hardy's novels. At the time I read Hardy, I didn't know anything about alcoholism but certainly had been bewildered to come across people like Michael in my life. Hardy's ability to see from so many perspectives amd to write about complex family relationships makes me wonder if he grew up in an alcoholic household. Thank you for taking the time to write at length.

There is still some snow here and there from that unexpected snowfall, but most of it melted in the much-appreciated sunshine. The sky was unbelievably blue and clear. The light is taking on that spring quality even though there is a dense cloud cover today.
