I often see Pileated Woodpeckers in Pt. Defiance Park, but few pictures ever turn out as well as this one taken Wednesday at Nisqually.

He’s a beauty!
Extraordinary photo! The first time I saw a Pileated Woodpecker, I was astounded by its size and presence. Seeing your photo, I have that same feeling of astonishment.
Looks like we’re going to have another sunny day. The sun is almost up. Still cold, though. The pond has frozen again. Just now I turned toward the porch in time to see a Towhee on one of the planters.
The light after sunrise is golden this morning.
the clear cut colors of the north wind days. thanks for this, loren. kjm
Fantastic! I saw my first Pileated Woodpeckers ever up near our new Adirondack property last fall.
Superb, Loren. Pileateds are also in Gainesville, Florida. The way they fly seems prehistoric to me.
Have no idea what their range is.
Well done Loren – I’ve never been able to get close enough to one with my awful camera to get a decent shot
Brian – This picture shows you their range in the US and Canada
